Stepper Motor manufacturing process flow

A method of making stepper motor includes: providing a permanent magnet rotor carried by an output shaft; forming a bobbin having an alignment feature, a bearing opening for supporting the shaft, and a passage for receiving the permanent magnet rotor; forming a magnetically soft stator-yoke located around the inside of the passage; winding a coil of electrically conducting wire around the bobbin; and providing a motor housing for receiving the bobbin and where the motor housing has a corresponding alignment feature to align the bobbin with the housing.

Our Process For Custom Stepper Motors

01 Customer Specification of Motor

Deliverables

The customer delivers a specification of the required performance of the motor taking into account the motor torque and speed requirements over the relevant duty cycle.

PMW can assist with this phase and in some cases provide a strategic study to arrive at the best combination for the complete motion control system.

02 Magnetic and Thermal Motor Study

Lead Time

2-4 weeks from receipt of purchase order. Customer places order for magnetic study. PMW undertakes magnetic and thermal study.

Deliverables

Report with outputs from the magnetic study that will determine the electromagnetic configuration of the motor taking into account thermal constraints. Customer reviews the magnetic study report.

Cost

Depending on complexity.

03 Mechanical Design of Motor

Lead Time

2-8 weeks, depending on customer requirements. Customer confirms the specification of the interfaces between the motor and the rotary and static sides of the application, so that PMW can commence mechanical design.

Deliverables

Parasolid model of final motor (surfaces only) and outline drawings together with an updated firm quotation for engineering samples. Customer reviews the Parasolid model and outline drawings for confirmation of integration into application.

Cost

Charged per motor variant, depending on complexity.

04 Engineering Sample Motor Manufacture

Lead Time

2-8 weeks, depending on customer requirements. Customer confirms the specification of the interfaces and places order for mechanical design and samples.

Deliverables

PMW produces engineering samples in-house. Parts will usually be machined from solid, hand assembled and tested by our advanced production team.

Cost

Determined by the choice of motor size, electromagnetic configuration, mechanical design and quantities.

05 Volume Motor Manufacture

Deliverables

Finally, PMW can put together a complete plan for small or large volume manufacture involving tooling and set-up of a dedicated production line.

Supporting Subheading

You need to know the motor specifications as well as the controller specification. Once you have that information, check the “Matching the Driver to the Stepper” page to see if they are compatible.

Most motors have torque specifications – usually in inch/ounces or newton/centimeters. One inch/ounce means that the motor can exert a force of one ounce at one inch from the center of the shaft. For example, it could hold up one ounce using a 2″ diameter pulley.

When calculating the torque required for your project, be sure to allow extra torque required for acceleration and to overcome friction. It takes more torque to lift a mass from a dead stop than it does to simply hold it up.

If your project requires a lot of torque and not much speed, consider a geared stepper.

For motors purchased from Adafruit, there are wiring instructions listed in the product descriptions.

For other motors, check the motors spec sheet if available.

If you don’t have a spec sheet, check Jason on reverse engineering the stepper wire pinouts.

First make sure it does not exceed the voltage rating for the motor or the controller.* You can usually run a motor at a lower voltage, although you will get less torque.

Next, check the current rating. Most stepping modes energize two phases at a time, so the current rating should be at least twice the current per phase for your motor.

The selection criteria of a stepper motor include resolution required, drive mechanism component, operating pattern required such as sequencing, accelerationetc. and torque required.
